Rite of Passage
(1999) The drum must be manŐs
oldest instrument. It has had magical powers and ritual significance ascribed
to it in cultures everywhere and at all times – from the rain dance of
the Indians to stirring war drums and todayŐs heavy metal. Rite of Passage is
an attempt to capture glimpses of the magic of the drums. The music consists
of repeated patterns, brief themes and figures that gradually and
imperceptibly shift, vary, and build up, with an underlying mood of the
inevitability of the ritual – or fate, if you like. |
